What
are the Causes of Hair Loss?
|
 |
|
There
are many theories on the various causes of hairloss. For Men, 95% of
the hair loss is caused by what is known as Male Pattern Hairloss.
For Women, it is called Female Pattern Hairloss. There are also
additional causes of hair thinning and hair loss in Women that are
not present in Men (childbirth, menopause, birth control pills).

So
What Actually Does Cause You to Lose Your Hair?
|
 |
|
There
are a number of causes of hair loss common to both Men and Women.
Some common causes of hair loss are:
|
-
Male
or Female Pattern Hairloss (caused by DHT) (95% of hair loss
cases)
-
Medical
treatment
-
Disease
or illness
-
Medications
(side effects)
-
Nutritional
deficiency (such as Zinc)
-
Excess
Vitamin A or Vitamin E
-
Mechanical
damage to the hair (Perms, Pulling)
|
|
|
|
Mechanical
damage is caused by harsh treatment of hair. Coloring, using curling
irons, corn rows, perms, and bleaching can all lead to hair loss.
These actions can weaken hair strands and hair roots, causing hair
to unnaturally fall out. Most of these causes of baldness are
reversible, as is Male or Female Pattern Baldness, if treated
or prevented properly. |

Why
Does DHT Play an Important Role in the Cause of Hairloss? |
 |
|
Through
modern research, scientists have discovered that DiHydroTestosterone
(DHT) is the major cause of Male Pattern
Baldness and Female Pattern Hairloss as well. DHT is converted from
Testosterone by the enzyme 5 Alpha Reductase (5AR). |

|

DHT
targets receptors in the hair follicle. Though all males have DHT,
males who experience Male Pattern Baldness have a greater number of
DHT receptors. DHT acts on the hair follicle, causing it to produce
thinner and shorter hairs. It also reduces the life span or growing
cycle of the affected hair follicle. Eventually excessive levels of
DHT will destroy the hair follicle, causing it to no longer produce
hair. When enough hairs in a particular area lose their hairs, that
is when you notice a bald spot on your scalp. If left untreated, the
hair loss generally continues to increase and spread throughout your
scalp. |

Who
is Affected by Hair Loss? |
 |
|
Hair
loss affects men and women although it affects both differently.
Men
can start showing signs of hair loss in their 20's. By age 35, 35%
of males are experiencing some sort of hair loss. In their lifetime,
65% of all males suffer the effects of hair loss. The majority of
males suffering from hair loss have what is called Male Pattern
Baldness. Here the hairline in the front recedes and there is a
"dome" at the back of the head, where hairloss also
occurs. It eventually looks like a horseshoe shaped ring of hair
surrounding a bald spot on the top of the head.
Women
may start to experience hair loss in their 30's. Their hairloss
becomes notably more pronounced in their 50's, especially after
menopause. Whereas men tend to have their hair loss concentrated at
the top of their head, women tend to have an overall thinning of the
hair throughout their scalp.
